Welcome to my Weblog! I'm trying to feature some current and ongoing works here, so if you enjoy what you see (and maybe if you don't) be sure to leave a comment! Also, if you'd like to see more of my work, click here to see my full online portfolio!
Awhile back, when I just came off the amazing experience of getting kid’s books published Kid Malone was a character I became excited about. Originally a little boy whose folks worked on the Adamville Police force, I thought it would be fun to go through a number of “cases” with a touch of noir.
More recently, Kristen suggested Kid should be a girl and it just clicked.
While creating the female version of Kid, I also saw the necessity for a Watson to my new Heroine Holmes. Some in my family may see a certain similarity to the character “Red” among our wonderful circus of relatives.
I’ll keep posting updates and eventually as this project forms maybe even some more polished artwork.

Spent a day or two contemplating this one, then remembered the end of Doogie Howser (sic). I love his episodic confession about his day of life lesson/s. This of course reminded me of this recent article about hospital robots. What’s better, some awkward kid stealing your gig, or a freaking ROBOT!

I don’t know, all I know is this was the first thing I thought of when I read satellite.

After a long day, relaxing on the couch and sipping beer with Kristen. She actually painted the background using the tablet and ArtRage, and I sketched over the top. Teamwork.

For IllustrationFriday.com’s current theme, they joined up with a blog running a very smart and cool campaign to gather artwork and sell it on sketch cards for $10 each and then in turn donate that money to helping wildlife affected by the Gulf spill.
I know this piece doesn’t portray wildlife, but when I sat down to do the project all I could think about was that perspective of being underwater. Looking at video of the oil pumping, the water sort of rippled with the mixture of gasses streaming out with the oil.

Especially with ocean swimming, but generally when taking a “dip” , I tend to feel this way.
Enjoyed this 40 minute draw-ring while sipping coffee. It’s been a while since I’ve even tried to draw.

A truly wonderful and eccentric businessman and pioneer of the 1800′s, John Chapman, also known as Johnny Appleseed for his dream of bringing nurseries to all the other, really true pioneers moving westward.

My experience with ArtRage is still in the rudimentary stages, so I thought I’d expand my horizons a little with this program. Using the painterly style inherent in the software, you can achieve some very rich textures. It’s a little strange translating my usual vector heavy style into an actual “traditional” medium, but pretty fun.
This took about the same time it would have in Illustrator, about 40 minutes and another 10 in Photoshop getting the color and contrast more to my liking.
All in all, a really cool, cheap program that I’ve barely put a dent in as far as capabilities. I made it for IF’s theme of “skinny”, but I’ve titled it “Still Life With Emaciated Man”.

I have a love/hate relationship with ice cubes. I love the way they stick to the fingers when you dig into the icebox, but I hate tearing them off. This week’s theme for IF was “frozen” and I instantly thought of this little icebox oddity. This took about 30 minutes to get right in Adobe Illustrator.
